Uninsured motorist is a selective insurance coverage you can either elect to pay for or you can choose and sign off that you do not wish to purchase uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage.
Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage is insurance that provides you coverage if you are involved in a motor vehicle collision and the at fault driver either has no insurance to pay for your damages or the at fault driver does not have enough insurance coverage to pay for your damages.
This is a protective insurance policy. This is one of the few ways you can prevent being involved in a motor vehicle collision with no insurance coverage. Because you can not control if you are in a motor vehicle collision, and you can not control if other drivers have insurance, but with uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage you can insure that you have coverage should you need it. With uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage you limit how a motor vehicle collision can affect you financially.
If you are involved in a motor vehicle collision and do not have uninsured motorist, it is too late to obtain the coverage for that collision. Like any form of insurance this coverage will benefit you in an unexpected collision.
