The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia is heading up the effort to stop the deadly strain of fungal meningitis that has emerged after contaminated steroids were administered to patients receiving epidural steroid injections. The contamination originated from the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Massachusetts, and the medication has been administered to patients in 17 states including Georgia.
Epidural steroid injections, or ESI’s, are a common form of treatment for car accident victims and others suffering from back pain. Many people who have been injured in auto collisions experience some form of neck or back injury, and ESI’s are commonly used to treat back pain. This kind of injection is administered every day, and health officials acknowledge that the number of infected patients continues to grow.
So far, the tainted steroid has infected 308 people, according to the CDC. 24 people in 7 states have died from fungal meningitis after receiving the injections. While the steroid product has been recalled and is no longer being administered to patients, new cases are reported every day as patients come down with symptoms of fungal meningitis. The first case in Georgia was reported last week.
The CDC is working tirelessly to notify patients who may have been exposed to the tainted steroid. Symptoms can include severe headache, a stiff neck, nausea, dizziness, and fever. Some people have even had strokes. According to the agency, 97% of the 14,000 patients who may have received contaminated injections have been contacted.
Fungal meningitis is otherwise very uncommon, and this outbreak has left doctors scrambling to treat the serious illness in patients who have been exposed to the contaminated steroid. If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of fungal meningitis and have recently received an epidural steroid injection, you should seek medical treatment. You should also contact an attorney to learn about your rights.
