New Dangerous Dog Law in Georgia Increases Owner Penalties for Attacks
A new law was passed Thursday when Governor Nathan Deal signed House Bill 685, which creates serious penalties for owners of dangerous dogs who have attacked people. This bill is important because it creates stricter penalties for people who do not take proper precautions with dangerous dogs, as well as ensures compensation for dog attack victims.
The bill mandates that any person who owns a vicious dog must carry an insurance policy of at least $50,000. The Georgia legislature has taken a very important step here to protect the victims of dog attacks. A dog who has already attacked a person is at a much greater risk of attacking again. By forcing owners of these kinds of dogs to carry insurance, the law has taken a big step in helping to provide a way for attack victims to seek compensation for injuries.
Dog attacks can be deadly. Children are the most at risk for serious injury and death when attacked by a vicious dog. Medical bills for dog attack injuries can be extremely expensive, so it is important to have a way for victims to obtain compensation. Dog attack victims frequently receive stitches for deep cuts and lacerations, and sometimes even plastic surgery is needed to fully recover from the visual reminders of a vicious dog attack.
As well as requiring dangerous dog owners to purchase insurance policies, the new law creates rules and guidelines that dog owners must follow. Dangerous dog owners must microchip their pets, keep the animals secure in enclosed spaces, and keep dogs muzzled when they are out on a leash. Dog owners who don’t adhere to these rules can be charged with a misdemeanor. Owners whose already vicious dogs attack a person again can be charged with a felony. If a dog attacks a second time, owners could face at least a year in prison and a fine of at least $5,000.
People are seriously injured in dog attacks every day by no fault of their own. By creating criminal penalties for vicious dog owners, hopefully we will quickly see a decrease in these terrible attacks.
