Purchase Insurance Coverage to Protect Yourself
As an injury attorney in Georgia, I help seriously injured clients obtain the compensation they deserve as the result of another driver’s negligence. Unfortunately, I see situations all the time where there is simply not enough insurance coverage to compensate my client for all of his or her damages.
To drive legally in Georgia, you must carry at least $25,000 in insurance coverage. Many drivers carry only this minimum amount. Some drivers carry no insurance at all. It is estimated that 1 in 7 drivers in Georgia are uninsured. To protect yourself, it is important that you carry uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage on your own insurance policy.
If you are hit by a driver with no insurance, you can pursue an uninsured motorist coverage claim. If your injuries and lost wages exceed the amount of insurance the at-fault party carries, you can pursue a claim for additional compensation through your underinsured motorist coverage. Another source of insurance coverage is a Medical Payment policy. Med-Pay coverage can be used to pay your medical bills and those of anyone else in your vehicle who is injured in an accident, regardless of fault.
Uninsured/underinsured and Med-Pay coverage are all optional. You need to check with your insurance company to make sure you are adequately protected. Some people think that because they have full coverage they have these protections, but that is not always the case.
When my clients have uninsured/underinsured and Med-Pay coverage, they never regret it. The truth is, no one knows if they will be seriously injured in a car accident. It is always best to be prepared.
