An Atlanta bicyclist was seriously injured after being struck early Wednesday morning by a vehicle driven by a man who was allegedly drunk, according to Atlanta police.
Christopher Hamer-Hodges was hit as he rode through the intersection of Peachtree Road and West Paces Ferry Road in Buckhead, said police. He was thrown from his bicycle and sustained a broken leg, broken rib, and possible head trauma. Mr. Hamer-Hodges was immediately taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
According to witnesses who saw the accident occur, Mr. Hamer-Hodges had the right of way when he crossed through the intersection.
The driver of the vehicle, David Seigel, did not stop after the collision occurred. Police did apprehend him a short time later. According to police, Mr. Seigel was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, and following too closely. Police said that once Mr. Seigel was stopped, a breathalyzer test was administered, and Mr. Seigel blew a .142.
This sounds like a case of gross negligence on the part of Mr. Seigel for driving drunk. Mr. Hamer-Hodges surely has a long process of rehabilitation ahead of him, and I wish him a quick recovery. Considering that there are witnesses to testify that Mr. Hamer-Hodges had the right of way going through the intersection, and the fact that Mr. Seigel’s breathalyzer results show him to be legally drunk, it does not appear that the victim of this accident contributed to it in any way. Mr. Hamer-Hodges was a victim of a drunk driver as he was following traffic laws and crossing the street when he thought it was safe.
