Teen Dies in I-516 Crash in Savannah

Just after 2:30 PM on Thursday afternoon, 16-year-old Halie McKirgan lost control of her car during a heavy rainstorm, according to police, causing her to cross over the median on I-516 eastbound, crashing into a mini-van. Both the driver of the mini-van, 30-year-old Felicia Hayes, and McKirgan were extracted from their vehicles by the Savannah Fire and Emergency Service personnel team and taken to Memorial University Medical Center.

According to police spokeswoman Gena Sullivan, Hayes was treated for non-life threatening injuries, but sadly, McKirgan was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Sullivan also added that the Major Accident Investigation Team is continuing to investigate the incident.

Driving on wet roads can be highly dangerous, so it’s important for all of us to use extreme caution when taking on inclement weather in our vehicles.

We offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Halie McKirgan after her sudden and tragic loss.
