Robert Crapse was killed Friday morning in a terrible wrong way wreck on I-95, according to local news reports. Another vehicle was driving the wrong way on the northbound lanes of I-95 around 2am, and struck Officer Crapse head on, according to police. He was driving his police cruiser.
Patricia Ann Collins of Richmond Hill was driving the mini-van that crashed into the police cruiser. She was driving southbound in the northbound lane when the crash occurred as per the reports.
According to Bryan County Sheriff Clyde Smith, Crapse had been working traffic control, and was heading back when the collision occurred. Crapse, who was a resident of Ellabell, is a K9 officer. He had his dog Seppe with him at the time of the accident, but the dog appears to be OK, according to police.
Officer Crapse tragically left behind a wife and three children.
My thoughts and prayers go out of the family and friends of Officer Crapse. What a horrible tragedy. It is always sad when someone loses their life in a traffic accident, but it is especially terrible when we lose a dedicated officer of the law. Hopefully, the police investigation into this matter will shed some light on the facts of the incident. What caused the other driver to be going the wrong way on the highway in the early morning hours? Were drugs or alcohol a factor in the crash? Hopefully the investigation will turn up the answers to some of these questions.
