According to an article in the Savannah Morning News on savannahnow.com, a man from Riverdale was killed on Thursday in a wreck involving a semitruck that he was riding in.
Police said that the incident took place around 10:30 p.m. on I-95 near exit 21. Witnesses reported that the truck never slowed when it left the roadway down a steep incline. It then crashed into a tree and partially overturned.
The driver of the rig was found behind the wheel and was incoherent. The police are unsure if there was a medical issue involved or something else, like fatigue. The driver told police that the last he remembered, he was travelling south on I-95.
The deceased, James McWilliams, from Riverdale, was removed from the truck’s cab by emergy workers using the Jaws of Life. However, he died after an ambulance had taken him from the scene.
The driver was hospitalized, and was in good condition Friday afternoon according to the article.
We offer our sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. McWilliams and hope that the driver who was injured is able to make a full recovery.
