Georgia dog bite legislation has been in the news lately, as the Senate passed legislation last week which would charge the owner of a dog with a felony if their dog attacks a human for the second time.
Currently under Georgia law, a dog is already considered “vicious” after a first attack on a person, but House Bill 685 would increase the punishment for attacks by a dog deemed vicious.
The bill will now return to the House for another vote, as the Senate changed the originally-passed bill by the House. After the House passes the bill, it will have to go the governor for his signature to become law.
The legislation was spurred by recent dog attacks on children in Atlanta and Savannah, in which dogs had attacked a human in previous incidents.
