As reported by the Savannah Morning News on savannahnow.com, seven-year-old, Javon Roberson, is still recovering after a vicious pit pull attack in an East Savannah playground last week.
Bernard Moultrie, who witnessed the attack, stated that two pit bulls ran toward a playground in Gordonston’s Treat Park after hearing the screeching sound of a metal swing and the shrill voices of playing children. Moultrie followed the dogs as they ran toward the park. Two other men, Herbert Swain and Henry Murphy also heard the commotion and ran to the park. Together, the three men were able to save the life of 7-year-old Javon Roberson, who was being mauled by one of the pits, and protect the other children in the park. Swain and Murphy beat the dogs with bricks. Moultrie tossed a gun to Murphy, who shot the dog twice killing it according to Moultrie.
The incident is being investigated by Savannah-Chatham metro police. No previous reports of violent behavior by the dogs have been found. However, the owners were cited once for allowing one of the dogs to run loose. This time, the dogs apparently got loose from a car when a child opened the door. Investigators are consulting the District Attorney’s Office to see what, if any, charges can be brought in this case.
The victim remains in intensive care at Memorial University Medical Center. The child suffered extensive injuries to his face and has undergone two surgeries per the mother of the child, Tracie Roberson.
It is fortunate that they located the owners often times in dog bite cases the owners are never located. The responsibility of the owners will be based upon the municipal code or county code for the area where the attack occurred. Often times responsibililty can not be given up because of the behavior of a child.
An account has been set up to help the Roberson family at Wells Fargo bank. Donations can be made to the “Friends of Javon Roberson” account at the bank and PayPal donations can be made at the Friends of Javon Roberson Facebook page.
