As reported on WSAV.com, a bicyclist was seriously injured after he was struck by a van on Wednesday.
Cory Fife was struck by a Comcast van while riding his bike on the shoulder of Staley Avenue on the Deanie Frazier Overpass. He was transported to Memorial with life-threatening injuries and is in critical condition in the Neurological Intensive Care Unit according to Savannah-Chatham Metro Police.
Sgt. Anthony Gallo of the Major Accidents Investigation Team reported that the van hit Fife and the retaining wall of the bridge.
The driver of the van said that at the time of the crash, he was trying to pick up a pair of eyeglasses which had fallen. All driver have a responsibility to operate their vehicle focused on the task of driving without distractions. Every year distracted driving contributes to an estimated 5,000+ deaths and 448,000 injuries a year.
An investigation is underway.
