Ground Turkey Suspected in Salmonella Outbreak in Georgia and Other States - Prompts Recall

Thirty-six million pounds of ground turkey have been recalled by the Arkansas company, Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation due to possible Salmonella contamination according to the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The strain of Salmonella is multi-drug resistant.

The recall occurs after 79 people in 26 states have been sickened. Of those sickened, 22 people have been hospitalized and 1 death has been reported.

The ground turkey was distributed to retail stores nationwide.

Foods contaminated with Salmonella may cause salmonellosis if consumed. The infection can be deadly, especially in those people with compromised immune systems (infants, the elderly, people with HIV or those undergoing chemotherapy). Symptoms can include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 6-72 hours. Other symptoms of chills, headache, nausea, and vomiting can occur and last up to seven days.
