As per the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Services (FSIS), an Arkansas company, Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation, has recalled an estimated 185,000 pounds of ground turkey products that could be contaminated with
Salmonella Heidelberg. At this time, according to FSIS, no illnesses have resulted from the products.
The ground turkey products that have been recalled are listed on the
FSIS website. The products were distributed to retailers nationwide. The company, Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation, is requesting consumers return the recalled products to the point-of-purchase.
Ground turkey products were recalled by Cargill in August 2011 due to an outbreak of Salmonellosis. Salmonellosis is one of the the most common bacteria-related foodborne illnesses. Infections of this type are most dangerous and can be life threatening to people with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and those undergoing chemotherapy or with HIV.
Symptoms of Salmonellosis can include diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever within 6 - 72 hours. The particular strain in question, Salmonella Heidelberg, is resistant to some common antibiotics, which can be associated with a higher risk for hospitalizaiton.
