Program Targets Teens in the Fight Against Distracted Driving

In an effort to mitigate the huge number of lost lives and injuries stemming from distracted driving, a Seattle, Washington, attorney, Jason Epstein, and his law firm, Straight Talk Law, have spearheaded a campaign targeting teens. The Teens Against Distracted Driving (TADD) program's mission is to educate teens about the dangers of driving while distracted.

Why teens? Of all age groups, teens have the greatest proportion of distracted drivers. Sixteen percent of drivers 20 years-old and younger who have been involved in fatal crashes admit to distracted driving.  It seems like a nobrainer that we should be educating this group.

Along with actually getting out there himself to speak to teens about the dangers of distracted driving, Epstein has recruited teenagers from around Seattle to help spread the message by creating posters, fliers, editing websites, etc.  But a main component of this program is the pledge, which reads: "I pledge to completely stop texting and using my cellphone while I am driving. I understand the dangers associated with these actions and will spread the word to my family and friends to help us put an end to the dangerous habit." When teens make this pledge and sign it, either in person at one of Epstein's speaking engagements or via the TADD website, they receive the "Pldg 2 Nt Txt N Drv" bracelet.

TADD encourages everyone to get involved by selling bracelets at school for fundraisers or just giving them away to anyone who signs the pledge. Visit the TADD website for more information http://teensagainstdistracteddriving.com.
