Startling information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA): The amount of drivers who are texting has risen from .6 percent to almost 1 percent, an increase of almost 50%. This is despite new texting while driving bans in 35 states.

Two out of 10 drivers admit to texting occasionally. Even scarier - one out of two young drivers between the ages of 21 and 24 admit to texting while driving - ouch.

There may be correlatioin between the increase in drivers who are texting while driving and the increase in newer and better cell phones according to officials who are keeping up with these stats. New phones make texting while doing anything easier than ever.

You might be thinking that a lot of people must be getting ticketed with all this breaking of the law, however, in Georgia, since the ban went into effect over the summer, the Georgia State Patrol has written roughly only 100 tickets!  This is likely because the behavior is hard to pinpoint. It's difficult to know if someone is dialling a cellphone or texting. Perhaps both behaviors should be banned completely like it is for those under 18 in Georgia. This sure would make enforcing the law a lot easier, wouldn't it?
