Senator William Ligon, a Republican from Brunswick, sponsored a bill to make it a felony for illegal immigrants who are arrested for driving under the influence in Georgia. Currently under Georgia law DUIs are misdemeanors until you receive your fourth one. Senator Ligon advises this bill is a matter of public safety.
Some Senators are concerned about the constitutionality of this bill and the stress it will put on the jails.
What if someone is visiting and they are not a U.S. citizen and they are arrested? Should it be a felony for their first time? Would U.S. citizens expect the same treatment in other countries? Is this the state's way to handle a Federal matter which is not currently being addressed?
More questions than answers at this point, but stay tuned as this continues to twist and turn.
