Papayas Contaminated With Salmonella Sicken 10 In Georgia

Posted on Jul 29, 2011

Ten people in Georgia are believed to have been sickened by papayas contaminated by Salmonella. One of those cases was severe enough for the victim to be hospitalized.

Agromod Produce of McAllen, TX, recently recalled fresh and whole papayas that were distributed to wholesalers and retail stores across the US and Canada. Agromod has recalled all Blondie, Yaya, Mananita, and Tastylicious Brand Papayas that were sold before July 23, 2011.

These papayas have been linked to cases of Salmonella in 23 states including Georgia.

Consumers are strongly urged to return Blondie, Yaya, Mananita, and Tastylicious Brand Papayas to the store of purchase. Per Agromod, customers may contact the company with questions at 1-800-385-7658.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause sometimes fatal infections in high-risk people, such as young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. Persons in good health can experience fever, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), nausea and vomiting, as well as abdominal pain. Symptoms can develop 12-72 hours after infection. For more information regarding Salmonella, visit the FDA's Bad Bug Book.
