Savannah Bridge Wreck Kills Driver

Posted on Mar 17, 2011

As reported by the Savannah Morning News on savannahnow.com, a Georgia man was killed in a wreck on Tuesday on the north end of the Back River Bridge after his large cement pumping truck overturned and partially burst through the guard rail.

According to Lance Cpl. Bob Beres, spokesperson for South Carolina Highway Patrol,
Kenneth Dwuane Smith, 54, of Waynesville, Ga. was traveling southbound on U.S. 17
from South Carolina into Georgia when he struck the right curb of the bridge after losing
control of the vehicle.

The Savannah Fire & Emergency Services firefighters arrived at the scene in minutes and
attempted to extricate the driver from the vehicles cab with a high-altitude rescue. Mark

Keller, spokesman for Savannah Fire said the cab was hanging 25 feet above marshland
and it took about 2 hours to remove Smith.

It is unclear why Mr. Smith struck the curb, we still do not know if it was mechanical malfuction or some form of distraction.  The investigation is on-going.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Mr. Smith.
