When Dogs Turn Deadly

Posted on Feb 23, 2011

As reported by the Associated Press in the Island Packet, two Rottweilers killed Sirlinda Hayes, 66, while she was working in her garden in Dillon, South Carolina.

The dogs belonged to a neighbor, who attempted to help the woman. The dogs then attacked the owner causing severe injuries said spokesman, Captain Cliff Arnette of the Dillon County Sheriff’s Dept.

The animals would not allow emergency workers to approach the victims. Police shot and killed the dogs.

The dogs had gotten loose before but never acted aggressively.  Three other dogs, two adults and one puppy, were removed from the owner's home. It is uncertain whether the dogs will be placed up for adoption or if they will be euthanized.

The owner has not been charged according to the article.

In a similar incident also published in the Island Packet, a 3-year-old girl was severely mauled by a Pit Bull early Thursday morning outside her home in Port Royal, South Carolina.

A Port Royal police officer kicked the dog until he released the girl, but the pit bull went at her again.  The officer shot and killed the dog.

The girl suffered very severe injuries. She lost an ear and will need surgery on top of her head, according to a spokesperson for the Port Royal Police Department.

The 2-year-old dog was previously impounded twice for running free, said Toni Lyton, the Beaufort County Animal Control Agency Director. However, the Pit Bull never showed signs of aggression before.

The Port Royal Police plan to charge the owner.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those who were affected by these horrible attacks.
